Mary Jane Bates, affectionately known as “MJ,” passed away on Saturday evening, December 27, 2025, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. She was 78 years old. A beloved figure in the Carlinville community, MJ had been battling a lengthy illness before her peaceful passing. Her death was met with sadness by family, friends, and the entire town, where she had been an active and cherished resident. Born on May 5, 1947, in Herrin, Illinois, Mary Jane was the daughter of Don and Bertha (Barnes) Moake. She lived a full and rich life, filled with love, family, and service to her community.
Mary Jane’s life was marked by kindness and generosity, and she was known for her compassionate spirit. She married her late husband, James Bates, and together they raised a family in Carlinville. Throughout her life, MJ was deeply involved in the local church and various charitable organizations, dedicating her time to causes that were close to her heart.
