Outrage and Grief After Parady La Dies in ICE Custody — Family Demands Answers and Independent Investigation

The Upper Darby, Pennsylvania community is in mourning and seeking justice after 46‑year‑old Parady La died while in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody at the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia. His unexpected death has sparked anger, concern, and urgent calls for a full, independent investigation into the circumstances that led to his passing.

La was arrested on January 6, 2026, near his home in Upper Darby. His family says they received no prior notice of his detention and were initially unable to locate him, causing confusion and distress in their efforts to find a loved one suddenly taken into custody. The following day, Jan. 7, La was found unresponsive in his cell. Staff administered CPR and multiple doses of Narcan before he was transported to a local hospital. Despite these efforts, La died at approximately 3:22 a.m. on January 9.

ICE officials have stated that La’s death was linked to severe drug withdrawal and maintained that he was receiving care while detained. However, La’s family strongly disputes this account, arguing that he did not receive proper monitoring or adequate medical treatment during his time in custody. They contend that the facility failed to respond appropriately to his needs, particularly as he exhibited symptoms of distress.

The case has drawn attention from local officials, activists, and community members who say it highlights systemic issues with medical care, communication, and oversight in ICE detention facilities. Protesters and advocates are demanding transparency, accountability, and an independent external investigation to establish the facts and ensure justice for La and his family.
