According to witnesses and arrest warrants, the chain of events began when a white pickup truck swerved to avoid another vehicle, colliding with a Honda Civic and a third car before veering off into a ditch. The driver of the pickup, identified as 33-year-old Paul Jones Greenwood of Nichols, exited his vehicle and became involved in a heated argument with the driver of the Honda Civic.
What began as a verbal dispute quickly escalated. Bystander video captured the sound of multiple gunshots as the confrontation intensified. Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard confirmed Greenwood was shot during the altercation and later died from his injuries.
The driver of the Honda Civic, Elijaih Thurman Taylor, 23, of Nakina, North Carolina, has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Authorities say Taylor fired the shots that killed Greenwood. He is currently being held without bond at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center, according to Horry County spokesperson Thomas Bell. Witnesses Khadijah Hemingway and her mother, Evettie—who were also involved in the crash—told investigators they saw Taylor standing nearby as he fired the weapon.
Highway 90 was shut down for several hours near Star Bluff and Long Bay roads while law enforcement conducted their investigation, reopening by early afternoon. Police continue to examine video evidence as the case moves forward as a homicide investigation.
In the wake of Greenwood’s death, a GoFundMe has been established to support his family. He is remembered as “a loving father, brother, son, and friend” and is survived by his girlfriend, Brittany Johnson, and his three children.
