Traffic collisions remain a significant concern in Fresno, California, with recent data highlighting persistent risks on urban streets and highways. In 2024, the city recorded at least 53 fatalities from traffic accidents, while Fresno County saw higher totals, including 123 deaths on Highway 99 alone involving serious injuries and fatalities. California’s Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) reported 1,647 injury-involved collisions in Fresno city limits that year, averaging over 1,500 annually in recent years. Fresno experiences approximately 7-8 police-reported crashes per day, with injury collisions far outnumbering fatalities. Intersections like Friant Road and Shepherd Avenue, often called “Friant Roulette,” stand out as particularly dangerous, recording dozens of crashes from 2020-2024 due to confusing signals and high speeds. Pedestrians and vulnerable road users face elevated risks, with many incidents involving impaired or distracted driving. Although statewide fatalities declined slightly in recent years, Fresno’s rates remain above average compared to other California cities, underscoring the need for continued safety campaigns and cautious driving.
