Steve Baker, Tipp City – A Life Remembered: Fond Memories of a Cherished Friend and Colleague

This morning, we received the heartbreaking news of the passing of our dear friend, Steve Baker. Since hearing the news, I’ve found myself reflecting on the many moments we shared, the times we worked together, and the laughs we had along the way. As I thought about Steve, one particular memory came to mind, a picture that always makes me smile when I look at it. It was from September 2012, during a daylong WHIO-TV reporter meeting held at Aileron in Tipp City. This place, right in the heart of “Bakerland,” as Steve lovingly referred to it, holds so much meaning for all of us who knew him.

Steve’s beat as a reporter stretched across the Northern Bureau, covering Miami, Darke, Shelby, Mercer, and Auglaize counties, which he often fondly called “Bakerland.” To anyone who worked with him, it was clear how much pride he took in his coverage of these communities. The connection he had with the people there was unmatched—Steve was a part of the fabric of those places. It wasn’t just the stories he told, but the way he built relationships with those he covered. Steve’s warm nature and dedication to his work made him a beloved figure throughout the Northern Bureau, and he’ll be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.

Looking at that photo from Aileron, I can still hear Steve’s laughter and see the familiar gleam in his eyes. It was a day where we weren’t just colleagues, but friends sharing stories and enjoying each other’s company. Whether it was behind the scenes or out in the field, Steve had a way of making everyone feel at ease. His sense of humor and generosity of spirit were his trademarks. It’s these qualities that made Steve not only an incredible reporter but also a friend who could always be counted on to brighten any room. The loss of Steve Baker leaves a gap in our hearts, but his memory will live on through the countless moments we shared.

As we process the loss of Steve, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy as both a professional and a friend will continue to inspire those who worked alongside him. He leaves behind a community of people whose lives were enriched by his presence. Steve was one of a kind—his work, his friendship, and his spirit will never be forgotten. Today, we remember Steve Baker with love, fondness, and gratitude for all the moments he gave us, and we hold those memories close as we say goodbye to a truly remarkable person.
