Lee Marlow, the beloved RCA recording artist whose heartfelt music resonated with fans far and wide, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Known not only by his stage name, Lee Marlow, but also as Leo Cormier, the 71-year-old musician left behind a legacy of timeless songs, deep connections with fans, and an undying influence on the Maritime bluegrass scene.

Lee’s passing has created a void that is felt not just by his family but by the entire musical community that knew him. His wife Joanne Marlow, his children—including son Julien—and countless friends, collaborators, and fans now must grapple with the immense loss of a man whose music brought joy, comfort, and pride to so many.

A Storied Career Defined by Heartfelt Music

Lee Marlow’s career was a testament to the power of music to connect and heal. Self-taught on the guitar at age 15, Lee soon began performing with his first band, capturing the attention of fans across the Maritimes and Ontario. In the early 1980s, Marlow recorded three albums with RCA, a partnership that helped propel him into the hearts of listeners worldwide.

His debut album, Lovin’ Thru the Early Hours, featured the hit song “Joanne,” a tribute to his beloved wife. The song, which became a Top-10 hit in 1981, was the first of many chart-toppers that would define his career. His music was a blend of traditional country and bluegrass, infused with the raw emotion and storytelling that were the hallmark of the Maritime sound. Throughout his career, Lee charted eleven singles in Canada, and his distinctive voice and mastery of the genre earned him numerous accolades, including two Juno nominations in 1982 and 1983 for Country Male Vocalist.

Marlow was also a valued collaborator, performing with groups like Cajun Moon and working with legendary session musicians to create a sound that defined the Maritime bluegrass scene. His impact on fellow musicians cannot be overstated. “He made us better musicians and better people,” said one former bandmate. “We were lucky to play backup for Lee Marlow many times.”

A Legacy of Warmth and Mentorship

Off the stage, Lee Marlow was known for his warmth, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family and community. Even in the face of his illness, he continued to greet friends with his signature smile, offering encouragement and sharing his love of life. “He had a big smile, even when he was sick,” said a lifelong friend. “We’d talk about our Leafs, and I know he’s up there cheering them on with us.”

Despite stepping away from national attention in the late 1980s, Marlow remained a cornerstone of New Brunswick’s music scene. His legacy as a mentor and leader among musicians is undeniable. Lee’s influence extended far beyond the studio, as he helped shape the careers of countless regional talents, ensuring that the rich traditions of bluegrass and country music would continue to thrive for generations to come.
