A Life Well Lived, A Heart Deeply Loved
With profound sadness and a deep sense of gratitude for the life he lived, we remember Sean McNamara, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend whose passing has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him. Sean’s life was a beautiful testament to love, hard work, and kindness. He was not just a man who worked tirelessly throughout his career but one whose true passion lay in the family and community that surrounded him. Whether he was mentoring others in his journalism career or laughing with his daughters and grandchildren, Sean’s warmth, humor, and generosity never went unnoticed.
A Family Man, A Community Pillar
Sean was born on April 2, 1959, in Ogdensburg, NY, to John “Jack” and Mary Lou McNamara. Raised in the community that would remain his home, he spent his life cultivating lasting relationships and friendships that spanned decades. From his early years at St. Mary’s Academy and Ogdensburg Free Academy to his time at SUNY Canton, Sean’s strong sense of integrity and his dedication to those around him became clear.
In 1984, Sean married Mary Jones, and together they raised two beautiful daughters, Erin and Catherine, whom he loved with all his heart. Although his marriage to Mary ended, the respect and friendship between them endured, as they remained close in support of their daughters. Sean’s legacy is most vividly seen in the love he had for his family—his daughters, his beloved grandchildren, and his four brothers and sister. His joy and pride were unmistakable as he celebrated each milestone with them, whether it was attending family gatherings, teaching his grandkids how to fish, or simply sharing quiet moments of love and laughter.
A Career Built on Connection and Integrity
Sean’s professional life was equally defined by connection. A respected figure in journalism, he began his career at the Ogdensburg Journal, later contributing to the Press Republican and Johnson Newspaper Corporation. His last decade as Advertising Manager at North Country Now saw him at the height of his career, known for his creativity, professionalism, and mentorship. Sean’s ability to connect with people—whether colleagues, clients, or friends—was unparalleled, and it was this quality that earned him the admiration of all who worked with him.
After retiring in 2024, Sean reflected proudly on more than 40 years in the field. But even in retirement, his true joy came from the simplest things: spending time with his loved ones, enjoying outdoor activities, and giving back to the community. A passionate golfer, he also found fulfillment in camping, fishing, and woodworking—finding peace in nature and the satisfaction of creating something meaningful with his hands.
A Legacy of Love, Laughter, and Service
Sean is survived by his daughters Erin (Thomas) Reardon and Catherine McNamara, his grandchildren Emma and Leah, and his siblings. He was predeceased by his brother, John “Jack” McNamara, whom he now joins in eternal rest. His family, along with countless friends and colleagues, will continue to honor his memory, cherishing the way he lived his life with kindness, humility, and generosity.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club, a cause Sean supported to strengthen the youth of his community. A celebration of Sean’s life will take place on December 17, 2025, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, with visitation hours on December 16. He will be missed dearly, but his love, laughter, and legacy will live on in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
