The University of California San Diego, along with the Castle Rock, Colorado community, is grieving the loss of a beloved daughter, sister, friend, and student who had her entire life ahead of her. Sonja was killed in a car accident that took her from us far too soon, leaving a void that will never be filled.
Sonja was the type of person who lit up any room she entered. Whether it was her radiant smile, infectious laughter, or her ability to make everyone around her feel like the most important person in the world, Sonja had a gift for making others feel special. Born and raised in Castle Rock, she was the cherished daughter of Peter and Christine Strom and the loving sister to Annika. From a young age, Sonja was dedicated to making the most of life. She excelled academically, was actively involved in sports, and dedicated much of her time to volunteering and helping others. Her kindness and sense of responsibility set her apart, earning her respect and admiration wherever she went.
From Castle Rock to La Jolla: A Journey Cut Short
After graduating from Douglas County High School, Sonja’s journey took her to the sun-soaked coast of La Jolla, California, where she enrolled in the prestigious Chemical Engineering program at the University of California, San Diego. There, she continued to excel academically, but also embraced the vibrant life that La Jolla had to offer. She was a lover of adventure—whether it was exploring the beaches of the Pacific Ocean, skiing in the winter, or traveling to new places with friends. Sonja was always ready for the next great adventure, and she embraced each new experience with the same enthusiasm that defined her life.
In addition to her adventurous side, Sonja had a creative spirit. She delighted in trying new TikTok recipes, reading books, and attending concerts. Her love for life was contagious, and anyone who knew her was drawn to her positive energy and zest for living. Whether it was spending time with her family in Colorado or making lasting memories with her friends in California, Sonja made sure that every moment counted.
