A Somber Sunday on the Ocoee River
The Cleveland and Polk County communities are in deep mourning following a tragic boating accident on the Ocoee River that claimed the life of 50-year-old Richard White on Sunday afternoon, April 26, 2026. According to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA), the incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. just south of Ocoee Dam No. 2. What began as a recreational paddling trip turned into an unimaginable tragedy when Richard fell from his raft into the surging river. Despite the frantic efforts of bystanders who pulled him from the water and performed CPR, Richard was later pronounced dead at Bradley Medical Center.
A Life Lived with Passion and Precaution
Richard White was a man known for his love of the outdoors and his “unwavering commitment” to the community of Cleveland, Tennessee. He was an experienced recreationalist who prioritized safety; TWRA officials noted that he was wearing all necessary protective equipment, including a life jacket and a helmet, at the time of the accident. His passing marks the sixth boating-related fatality in Tennessee this year, a sobering statistic that does little to ease the “profound void” felt by those who knew him. Richard was a man in the prime of his life, a friend to many, and a constant presence whose warmth made his hometown feel like a true family.
A Community United in Grief
As the TWRA and Tennessee State Park Rangers continue their investigation into the circumstances of the fall, the focus of the community has turned toward supporting the White family during their darkest hour. Neighbors and friends have described Richard as a man of steady character and genuine kindness—a person whose sudden absence has left the community “struggling to process the depth of this loss.” While the river continues its flow, the landscape of Cleveland feels markedly different today. Richard White may have been taken far too soon, but the memory of his adventurous spirit and the love he shared with his community will remain an indelible part of the hearts he left behind.
