Tragedy Strikes in Downtown Athens
The communities of Athens and Hull are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Clayton Adams, a 22-year-old whose life was tragically cut short during a devastating shooting in downtown Athens early Saturday morning.
According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire around 2:20 a.m. in a parking lot located in the 400 block of North Jackson Street. When authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.
Clayton Adams was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, leaving family members, friends, and community members struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss. Two other victims, both in their early twenties, were rushed to a nearby hospital and remain in critical condition as doctors continue fighting to save their lives.
Suspect Arrested as Investigation Continues
Later that same day, authorities confirmed the arrest of Mark DeSousa, a 22-year-old from Jefferson, in connection with the deadly shooting.
Police say DeSousa is facing serious charges including malice murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated battery. Investigators have not yet released additional details about what led up to the shooting, leaving many in the community searching for answers.
Officials also confirmed that none of the victims were affiliated with the University of Georgia, despite the incident occurring near the bustling downtown area.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has joined the case to assist local authorities in uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
