Late on a quiet Wednesday evening in Minneapolis, a normally peaceful neighborhood was suddenly thrown into fear and confusion when tear gas released during nearby police activity drifted into the area — with devastating consequences for a family caught in its path.
According to witnesses, a family traveling in a vehicle near the scene included a 6-month-old infant and another young person. As tear gas spread through the street, it entered the car, exposing everyone inside. Moments later, the infant began gasping for air, triggering immediate panic among family members.
Desperate to help their child breathe, the family rushed out of the vehicle and ran into the nearest home they could find, hoping the enclosed space would offer protection and relief. Instead, the situation worsened. Inside the home, the infant’s condition rapidly declined, and the baby stopped breathing altogether, plunging those present into moments of terror and helpless uncertainty.
Emergency crews were called shortly after 9:00 p.m. Responders faced significant challenges reaching the scene, pushing their way through large, distressed crowds as concern and confusion spread through the neighborhood. When paramedics finally arrived, they worked urgently to stabilize the infant.
By the time emergency personnel reached the child, the infant had resumed breathing, but officials confirmed the baby remained in critical condition. The emotional toll on the family and witnesses was immense as the child was prepared for transport.
Both the 6-month-old infant and the older youth were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment and observation. As of now, authorities have not released further updates regarding their conditions.
The incident has raised serious concerns among community members about the use of tear gas in residential areas, particularly where children and families may be present. Residents have expressed fear, anger, and calls for accountability, emphasizing the potential dangers of chemical agents on vulnerable individuals.
