A serious shooting incident has taken place in the Auckland suburb of Onehunga, with one person critically injured and rushed to hospital following gunfire in the area on Friday morning.
Police were called to a property on Arthur Street shortly after 11 a.m. after reports that someone had sustained injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. Responding officers located the injured person at the scene and emergency medical teams transported them to Auckland City Hospital, where they remain in critical condition.
An increased police presence was reported around Arthur Street and nearby intersections, with parts of the area cordoned off for investigation. While residents witnessed tactical units on the ground and ongoing inquiries, authorities have assured the public that there is no known ongoing risk to community safety at this time.
Detective Senior Sergeant Matt Bunce described the shooting as a “targeted incident”, and police are appealing for any information, footage, or witness accounts that could assist detectives as they piece together what occurred. Members of the public with relevant CCTV or mobile footage from the vicinity of Arthur Street are urged to come forward to support the investigation.
Cordons have since been eased in some parts of the area, though officers remain in place as inquiries continue. Police are conducting detailed scene examinations to determine the circumstances leading to the shooting and to identify any others with information that may assist the investigation.
