The Lawrence, Kansas community is mourning the loss of Nikki Woolfolk, a beloved wife, mother, author, and friend, who passed away peacefully in early January 2026 after a remarkable battle with glioblastoma (GBM) brain cancer. Born Nikki Lynn Van Horn, she lived a life defined by resilience, imagination, and unwavering devotion to family and purpose.
Nikki’s husband, Chess Woolfolk, shared that her first brain surgery took place in October 2016, at which time doctors gave her an estimated two years to live. Refusing to be limited by prognosis, Nikki fought tirelessly through multiple surgeries, treatments, and the many physical and emotional challenges of her illness. Nearly a decade later, she became one of the longest-surviving GBM patients in history, inspiring countless others facing similar battles and offering hope where statistics often bring despair.
Family was at the heart of Nikki’s life. Every day of her fight was motivated by love for her husband and children. Chess stood faithfully by her side, a partnership marked by mutual strength, devotion, and perseverance. Her passing leaves a profound void in their lives and in the hearts of all who knew her.
